It is official. The World Health Organization has now raised the H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu) alert to its highest level, classified as a pandemic. The disease has now spread to 74 countries and has proven to be markedly contagious though thankfully not overly deadly.

We all thought this threat would go away but it will now spread to South America, which is currently in their winter season. There is a seasonality to influenza which supports the theory that the sun’s rays no longer converts Vitamin D maximally in our skin during the fall and winter. This so called Swine Flu virus, however, is not following the usual course, which has some authorities, believing the strain was actually created in a laboratory. Either way we cannot drop our guard, as it will surely reappear in the northern hemisphere this fall.

Many of you have heeded my pleas to obtain both the INT/ALPHA for flu and the Vitamin D3 supplements. You are all set. But for the rest of you who have not prepared, you are making a potentially grave mistake. Now is the time to prepare.

Vitamin D3 is doing two things:

Follow the instructions for their use as follows:

1) Take one drop 2 times per day prophylactically. But if exposed, do a rush-one drop every ten minutes for 4 doses and then 1 drop every 1-2 hours until signs and symptoms are controlled. The vial of INT/ALPHA for flu is sufficient for at least 2 people, possibly even 3 or 4 people. It is stable for easily one to two years if kept in the refrigerator.
2) If you maintain your blood level of Vitamin D3 above 45 ng, by taking a daily dose of 2000 I.U.’s to 4000 I.U.’s you will be less susceptible if exposed.
3) If you develop flu like symptoms, immediately take 1000 I.U.’s of Vitamin D3 per pound of body weight, as indicated below. These treatment doses should be taken for a minimum of 3 days.

50 lbs. 50,000 I.U.’s 1 capsule
100 lbs. 100,000 I.U.’s 2 capsule
150 lbs. 150,000 I.U.’s 3 capsule
200 lbs. 200,000 I.U.’s 4 capsule

We have Vitamin D3 50,000 I.U.’s per capsule containing 100 capsules per bottle, enough again to treat your whole family.

For daily maintenance of good health you need to take the regular dose of 2000 to 4000 I.U.’s. (available in both liquid and capsule form). Liquid Vitamin D3 comes in a dropper bottle containing 750 doses. Children can easily use these drops. Each drop equals 2000 I.U.’s. So you would use one drop per two pounds of body weight.

Some of the quickest deaths occur in the young and healthy because the virus sets off an immunologic cascade resulting in pneumonia and rapid death. Vitamin D3 in large doses produces antiviral peptides and also down regulates the acute immune cascade. The INT/ALPHA for flu formula turns off the viral replication. The combination with Vitamin D3 offers you a way of leveling the playing field to keep you alive and healthy.

Now is the perfect time to prepare.

I am encouraged by your response to our alerts regarding H1N1 Influenza. If you are following the news, there are more and more cases occurring especially in the Northeast. The cold and rainy weather may explain this phenomenon as Influenza is usually gone by spring.

Your INT Alpha or flu extract should go into the refrigerator and will remain effective for at least 2-3 years.

Vitamin D may be your most effective nutrient for prevention. Please read this next sentence carefully as new knowledge suggests a change in our previous instructions.

Vitamin D3 is doing two things:

1)Stimulating the body to produce antimicrobial peptides, which will literally kill the virus. 2)Down regulating the production of cytokines that produce an inflammatory response in your lungs. It is the overproduction of these cytokines, which kills the patient. Young people have the strongest immune systems and therefore produce the greatest response, which kills them.

Therefore, the most effective dose of Vitamin D3 prophylactically (to prevent) is 5,000 I.U.’s daily for everyone. (If you have Vitamin D3 2,000 I.U.’s take 3 capsules) But, if you are getting sick or are sick you must increase the dose of Vitamin D3 to 1000 I.U.’s per pound of body weight daily for 5 days. Please note the changes from previous alerts and use these recommendations as the final desired plan. The Vitamin D3 Drops contains 2,000 I.U.’s per drop and are available for children.

For those of you that do not have the INT Alpha and Vitamin D, PLEASE reconsider. For more information on Vitamin D visit http://www.vitamindcouncil.org

Natural Hormone Balancing for Men and Women

Is Something Missing from Your Health Picture?

You want to say to the doctor, “What am I missing? I just don’t feel like I used to. My energy is low, muscle strength and skin tone diminishing, mood a little flat, sex drive and performance less than desired, thinking and memory not as sharp, retaining some fluid, insomnia more frequent, some hot flashes and tender breasts. I’m told that all the tests are normal and that I’m ‘just getting old.’ I’ve lost that zest for living-and don’t know what to do.”

You may be among the millions of men and women who have some of the symptoms expressed above and have been told, “your tests are normal” and “you’re just getting a little older.” Based on your individual history, we who are interested in Preventive Medicine take such complaints seriously and look further for the cause.

Could it be hormone imbalance or deficiency?

A major piece of the puzzle could be a reduction or imbalance in your hormones. Hormone imbalances can start in a person’s teen years. Actual hormone deficiencies can start in some people in their early twenties. We would like to discuss this issue, starting with estrogen dominance or progesterone insufficiency.

The medical view on hormone replacement has come full circle. For most of the last thirty years, doctors were taught to use supplemental estrogen to help women with certain symptoms. They used a patented or synthetic hormone product obtained from pregnant mare’s urine called Premarin. This helped a number of women but was recently found to be causing breast, uterine, and ovarian cancer, as well as cardiovascular disease.

The Women’s Health Initiative scared off all medical doctors from hormone use-and rightly so.

  • The estrogens (and the synthetic progestins) are best suited for pregnant mares-not human females. These horse hormones are viewed as alien by the human body, since they are not identical to the sex hormones seen in human females.
  • Most synthetic estrogens, including Premarin, contained high amounts of estrone and estradiol, two very potent forms of estrogen.
  • The patients’ own levels of all the forms of estrogen, progesterone, and other important hormones were never measured to see if they were balanced or excessive.
  • When supplemental synthetic hormones were prescribed, they were not usually cycled to imitate the natural female menstrual cycle.
  • Finally, the “balancer” of excessive estrogen, the hormone progesterone, was only given if a woman had an intact uterus, and even progesterone was not given in its natural form but as a synthetic progestin.

But physicians like us who practice natural medicine differ from all of the above. We use special compounded pharmaceutical hormones, derived from wild yams, which are made in identical proportions to human hormones and prescribed in the lowest amounts required to “balance” the patient. We call these bio-identical hormones.

Careful monitoring with frequent testing, and following rhythmic cycling patterns for hormones, are two powerful ways to protect the patient. Care is also taken to balance all the hormones (estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and cortisol) to create a coordinated symphony. For example, optimal DHEA levels have been proven to correlate with longevity. [NOTE: Natural Hormone Balancing is best done under the guidance of a physician knowledgeable in the use of bio-identical hormones-beware of self-treating based on symptoms alone with over the counter products!]

As Anti-Aging physicians have known for years, when a man or woman has the right amount of hormones, in the correct balance, the body begins to look and function at an optimal level of wellness. The skin and muscle tone change, making a visual difference to family and friends. Energy, mood and sexual function begin to return to a level not known for several years.

Since hormones are the biggest coordinators of the body’s physiology, changes can be dramatic.
The rapid decline of body functions that takes place after the age of forty-five can be significantly lessened. Being fully functional with body and mind intact as we enter the seventh to the ninth decade is a possibility. Physical, mental, and emotional debilitation can be avoided, but be aware that symptoms of hormone imbalances and deficiencies can begin as early as in our twenties.

What is the solution for hormone imbalance?

Just knowing the possible symptoms of hormone imbalance doesn’t always help to determine what your own individual hormone levels might be.

A thorough hormone evaluation of the major hormones, through saliva and blood tests, measures hormone levels over time and identifies relative imbalances. Likewise, thyroid testing also requires a careful study of all fractions of the thyroid hormone in order to adequately assess true thyroid function, and not just the routine TSH testing done at most doctors’ offices. Most importantly, careful laboratory testing of all the major hormones, paired with careful consideration of a patient’s own individual medical and family history, allows appropriate natural bio-identical hormones to be supplied to correct imbalances. With this comprehensive approach, results can be dramatic.

If you are interested in learning more about your own hormone balance and deficiencies, call “The Center” at (843) 572-1600. A comprehensive diagnostic evaluation may be what you need for true health and well-being. Natural Hormone Balancing may be that missing piece in your health program that makes all the difference.

Because a woman’s intricate hormonal balance determines how she feels, looks, and functions, hormone testing and monitoring can be essential to her aging gracefully and beautifully. The Center’s Natural Hormone Balancing Program is one of the most loved and appreciated programs we’ve offered to date.

Hormone evaluation is one area where it is critical to have professional testing and monitoring based on years of clinical experience in order to achieve optimal hormone balance. In addition, laboratory results must be interpreted in light of a woman’s total health history and family history.

If your laboratory test results indicate a need for hormone balancing, our doctors recommend or use only bio-identical hormones and/or other natural therapies. These do not increase cancer risk but have been shown to actively prevent cancer when used in proper balance. We believe in partnering with each patient to arrive at a course of treatment that will not only support female hormone balance and relieve any uncomfortable symptoms, but also support every other aspect of health over time, without additional risk.

An important part of addressing hormone balance is to accurately assess whether

all the major hormones (all three forms of estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA) not only exist in proper quantities but in proper ratios to each other. Thyroid and insulin levels are other important hormones that must be considered. Test procedures need to adequately reflect levels over time, not just the quantity of hormones circulating in the blood on one particular day.

With accurate assessment of a woman’s hormonal balance, any necessary fine-tuning can be applied—always with natural, bio-identical hormones.

Typical comments have been: “I got my life back,” “My long-lost energy returned,” and “My mental clarity improved tremendously and my depression is gone.” Through careful assessment, using only natural and bio-identical hormones, women can safely restore that all-important part of a woman’s health–her delicate hormonal balance.

Almost as soon as the ball drops at Times Square many people start making resolutions to improve their health.

If your New Year’s resolution is to lose weight, you aren’t alone.

According to ABC News, 45 percent of Americans vow to lose weight as the New Year approaches. However, each year, many people try to go it alone without any support. This is the # 1 way that we set ourselves up for failure. We all need support. Not just from our family and friends, but from people going through the same journey, dealing with the same addictions and bad eating habits.

Let’s break this cycle in 2009! The Healthy for Life Weight Loss Program at COEM can help!

We are very pleased to offer a system that maximizes your success because it addresses all the major reasons for obesity:

  1. Decreased carbohydrate tolerance and poor blood sugar control (acquired or genetic)
  2. Hormonal imbalance
  3. Food allergy and food addiction, which are controlled by individualized food allergy drops.
  4. Nutrient deficiencies that decrease metabolism and increase cravings
  5. Lack of medical and professional support for adequate length of time
  6. Lack of knowledge about food choices (starving is NOT a desirable option)
  7. Lack of knowledge about safe exercise for overweight individuals
  8. Inability to maintain desired level of functioning when dieting

Our program is designed to not only successfully produce weight loss in our patients but to improve their health, energy, and fitness levels. This is accomplished by means of:

  • In-depth medical/laboratory assessment prior to entering the program
  • Counseling on appropriate diet, exercise, allergy, and other individualized factors
  • Weekly injections of lipotropic (fat-burning) nutrients that decrease hunger
  • (yes-these really work!)
  • Specific nutritional supplements, including licorice oil that reduces abdominal fat.
  • NO amphetamines, diet pills, herbal stimulants, or unhealthy gimmicks of any kind

As a medical practice, it is in our best interest, too, if you succeed. As your weight normalizes and the very real and severe medical risks caused by obesity are diminished, our ability to help you in other ways with your health is facilitated. Your success in this program makes our overall job as your chosen health care provider much easier. We consider ourselves partners with our patients in this program, and that is why we wish to give you the best tools and knowledge we have to make this program work for you.

You know the reasons why you, yourself, wish to lose weight and look and feel better. But did you know that the US government, medical and even insurance industries recognize the enormous risks and costs of obesity and are willing to do something about it? In April 2002, the Internal Revenue Service recognized obesity as a disease, instead of a precursor to other diseases. You may now claim weight loss programs which are under a physician’s guidance (such as this one) as a medical expense when you file your taxes. The cost of diet foods is not included, but if your insurance company does not yet provide reimbursement for a weight loss program (many do now), then the cost can be itemized as a tax-deductible medical expense.

We look forward to helping you achieve your weight loss and health goals.

Call and schedule your consultation today, 843-572-1600! What do you have to loose, except the weight?

HIDDEN CAUSES OF WEIGHT GAIN

By Allan D. Lieberman, M.D.

From 1980 to 2002 adult obesity in the U.S. doubled, and childhood obesity tripled. Yet, the standard view of poor diet and sedentary lifestyle cannot explain this epidemic rise.

We would like to offer readers an alternative view as to what may be the real cause.

In 2002, Baillie-Hamilton authored a paper titled “Chemical Toxins: A Hypothesis to Explain the Global Obesity Epidemic.” The earth’s environment has changed markedly over the last few decades, with increasing use of synthetic toxic chemicals, many of which have powerful weight- promoting actions at low concentrations. For example, Dursban, the most popular pesticide used in the U.S. for many years, when fed to animals resulted in significant weight gain in contrast to controls in as short a time period as two months.

As shocking as it seems, Americans get 25 percent of their caloric intake from sodas, with each soda providing the maximal accepted 10 teaspoonfuls of sugar per day. Yet it may be the plasticizers and Bisphenol A used in the polycarbonate bottle and the cans that are major culprits in promoting weight gain. The Center for Disease Control reports the presence of these plasticizers universally in our bodies.

Bisphenol A has the same estrogenic properties as Estradiol and the physiological status of most Americans is that we are estrogen dominant. (And yes, even post-menopausal women can have relatively too much estrogen compared to other equally important female hormones.) Estrogen dominance causes fat to accumulate around the hips, thighs and abdomen. The estrogenic effect of Bisphenol A leached from soft plastics disrupts pancreatic function and induces insulin resistance, the other pathologic disease process that is now at epidemic proportion and the precursor of adult onset diabetes.

Initially offered as a hypothesis five years ago, evidence of these synthetic toxic chemicals promoting obesity is no longer theory but fact. Sadly, if you look around you, you will see plastic water bottles everywhere as people substitute water for soft drinks, thinking they are making a positive change in their diets. Parents and children must be aware of the relationship between their obesity and increasing risk of diabetes from not only sodas but also toxic chemicals in most drink containers.

Obesity is thus a consequence of not only what we are eating but also what we are eating out of.

The Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine and the Center for Women’s Health at COEM offer a comprehensive program to help people control obesity safely and effectively. Call the Center at (843) 572-1600 for more information.

Bone loss is the second most commonly occurring health problem in women (after breast and other cancers). Since osteoporosis does not have any outward symptoms until a fracture occurs, early diagnosis and intervention are critical. Although a DEXA scan is valuable for measuring base line Bone Mineral Density, assessment of overall bone remodeling is possible only by comparing repeated scans.

At the Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine, we have been highly motivated to find a means of monitoring a woman’s bone building status without repeated radiation exposure. In time, our doctors found a safe, accurate, and very affordable test for measuring biochemical markers of bone turnover. Whenever collagen and bone are being broken down or resorbed, specific byproducts of the disintegration are found in the urine. With just one urine test, bone loss is not only identified but the severity of bone breakdown is also determined without the added risk of radiation.

When a woman’s health history and family history indicate a need for bone monitoring, the Center provides both noninvasive measurement of bone loss and a comprehensive and natural bone building program, including broad-based nutritional supplementation, dietary counseling, and when necessary, natural hormone balancing. Our Bone Health Program is a safe, natural means of preventing and overcoming osteoporosis, and is up to three times more effective than currently prescribed drugs.

AUTISM & CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

Treatment of Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, PDD, ADHD, and ADD

At the Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine, we believe that it is inadequate to simply give children drugs for developmental disorders without evaluating and correcting underlying problems. In addition, we understand that parents are overwhelmed with the sheer volume of new research about developmental disorders, which often yields a great variety of conflicting treatment options. Parents want knowledgeable, experienced medical help putting together an effective, safe treatment program to best care for their children.

The Center’s Medical Director, Dr. Allan D. Lieberman, M.D., was board certified in Pediatrics in 1966 and sub-specialized in the academically underachieving child. He has developed a comprehensive approach to the spectrum of developmental disorders. As specialists in Environmental Medicine, he draws on their knowledge of Allergy (both food and inhalant), Immunology, Toxicology, and Nutrition to evaluate and address causes

behind developmental disorders. The Center also uses the Defeat Autism Now protocols as Dr. Lieberman is recognized as a Defeat Austim Now provider.

For each new patient at The Center, including our pediatric patients, we perform a Comprehensive Diagnostic Work-up.

In the case of developmental disorders, The Center’s diagnostic work-up often includes specialized laboratory testing, depending upon a child’s history:

1) Allergy testing can be performed to determine food triggers and inhalant allergy.
2) Allergy desensitization for foods, inhalants, and chemicals can be provided to help reduce the Total Body Stress Load.
3) Structured food elimination diets can be provided to yield vital information about gastrointestinal function and food intolerance.
4) Urine tests for abnormal peptides from wheat or dairy can reveal if a gluten-free, casein-free diet would be well worth the effort to implement for a child.
5) Hair analysis of toxic metals and essential minerals can provide evidence of toxicity or deficiency, and provide clues for the safest forms of detoxification or supplementation.
6) Hidden sources of toxic pollutants are discussed, so parents know how to effectively address this area of concern.
7) Neuropeptide levels, the biomarkers of brain chemistry and function, can be tested to uncover specific imbalances that are treatable through individualized amino acid programs or other supplements.
8) Organic acid analysis (via urine specimen) can be performed to look for the metabolites of yeast and some bacteria species. This laboratory test is a valid and effective means to detect the presence of these pathogenic organisms.

In the words of Dr. Lieberman,

“When these children are tested, it is truly amazing what a heavy body burden of toxic metals (e.g. lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and nickel), as well as industrial solvents and other toxic chemical pollutants, that are found. Rarely do we see a child who does not have significant reactions to food, inhalant airborne allergens, and ambient chemical exposures. And rarely do these children escape respiratory infection with multiple courses of antibiotic use, which results in heavy body burdens of yeast organisms in their gastrointestinal tracts. Lastly, there is also evidence that live virus vaccines, specifically the MMR, may be responsible for many cases of Autism and developmental disorders.”

“What do all these things have in common that they can cause such blatant effects in this population of children? The answer is they are altering brain chemistry and function. Some are clearly neurotoxic, and others alter brain function indirectly by affecting the gastrointestinal tract and causing a leaky gut phenomenon or by producing substances capable of causing nervous system dysfunction.”

The Center is committed to helping parents with the important detective work of what is impacting their children’s biochemistry and how to maximize and normalize brain function. Fortunately, we have the scientific tools and expertise to shorten this otherwise lengthy detective process and provide appropriate treatment to restore balance.

Our goal in working with children can be summed up by the words of Dr. Montanari of Hialeah, Florida, who ran a residential school for exceptional children. He said, “You have to reach them to teach them.” Unlocking the mysteries behind altered brain function and providing comprehensive treatment helps us to reach them, so parents and teachers can teach them.
