At the Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine (COEM), we are committed to enhancing the health and well-being of our patients by embracing a holistic approach to healthcare. One of our key strategies involves the use of functional medicine test interpretation.
Functional medicine is a patient-centered, science-based healthcare approach that goes beyond disease diagnosis to identify the root causes of health imbalances. It involves a comprehensive analysis of a patient’s physiological functioning to determine the origin of diseases, rather than merely treating the symptoms.
In functional medicine at COEM, we utilize a range of comprehensive tests, including blood chemistry, toxicity testing, viral testing, hormone panels, nutritional assessments, microbiome analysis, and genomic testing. Each test provides us with a complete picture of a patient’s overall health, allowing us to assess imbalances in organ systems, evaluate nutrient deficiencies, or uncover genetic predispositions.
Our practitioners adopt a systematic approach to interpreting these tests. We compare test results to reference ranges and previous results (if available) to identify deviations from normal. We look for patterns in test results that may indicate underlying dysfunctions, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, or hormonal imbalances. We also correlate test results with the patient’s subjective experience, including symptoms and lifestyle factors, to gain a comprehensive understanding of their health status. Often times normal ranges do not mean that results are optimal for long-term health and where appropriate suggestions are made to work towards optimal ranges.
The comprehensive interpretation of test results informs the development of personalized treatment plans at COEM. We use the insights gained from the test interpretation to design interventions that address the root causes of the patient’s health issues. These may include changes in diet, physical activity, stress management techniques, and, where necessary, medication.
Our team incorporates a functional medicine approach into our practice to provide comprehensive, personalized healthcare solutions for our patients. Focused on identifying the root causes of diseases, our doctors collect detailed patient histories, conduct thorough physical exams, and utilize functional medicine tests to evaluate an individual’s overall health status.
These tests are vital for our approach to personalized healthcare. We assess an individual’s nutrition, lifestyle, genetics, and unique biochemical and physiological processes, providing our doctors with a comprehensive understanding of the patient’s health status.
Test interpretation is key to creating personalized treatment plans. These tests provide valuable insights into nutritional imbalances, gut health, hormonal balance, toxicity, and genetic predispositions.
Using these test results in conjunction with clinical findings, our doctors can identify specific imbalances and deficiencies in a patient. They then utilize this information to design a treatment plan tailored to bring the body back to its optimal state of functioning. This plan may include dietary modifications, lifestyle changes, targeted supplementation, and traditional therapies when necessary.
Every patient’s journey begins with an exhaustive consultation and review of their medical history. We dive into understanding their symptoms, lifestyle, emotional well-being, and other potential factors that could impact hormone levels.
After the consultation, our practitioners may order specialized lab tests that go beyond conventional hormone panels. These tests could include saliva, blood, and urine tests, which provide a complete view of a patient’s hormonal health.
Blood tests at our lab can provide information on a wide range of hormones like thyroid hormones, insulin, adrenal hormones, and others. Urine tests offer a comprehensive view of the body’s hormone metabolism, helping us identify imbalances or deficiencies.
Once the tests have been conducted, our practitioners analyze the results in the context of the patient’s symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle factors. This holistic analysis helps us to identify any hormonal imbalances, taking into account the interactions between different hormones, the body’s circadian rhythms, and the influence of other physiological processes.
At our practice, we do more than just see if hormone levels fall within standard reference ranges. We assess whether these levels are optimal for the patient’s overall health and well-being. If imbalances are found, we utilize a combination of stress management techniques, nutritional changes and supplementation, sleep hygiene improvements, and modifications to exercise and movement routines.
Our team begins by understanding what is considered a ‘normal’ level for each toxin or heavy metal. For instance, a blood lead level of less than 5 micrograms per deciliter is deemed safe. However, levels beyond this are potentially harmful, particularly for children. It is important to note however that each person responds differently to toxic exposures and even lower levels of toxins can cause a negative response in a person.
We also consider factors like the patient’s age, sex, physiological status, overall health, and exposure history to toxins or heavy metals. This is because certain populations, especially those working in industries with exposure to specific toxins or heavy metals, may naturally have higher levels in their system without necessarily experiencing toxicity in the short-term. However, long-term low level chronic exposure can cause severe long-term health problems.
Symptoms are another vital consideration. If a patient shows signs of toxicity such as nausea, stomach pain, or neurological symptoms like tingling and numbness, this might indicate that even a ‘normal’ level of a toxin or heavy metal is high for that individual.
The type of specimen used for testing also affects interpretation. We use blood tests to typically measure recent toxin or heavy metal absorption into the body, while urine and hair samples can detect both recent and past exposure.
Once test results are available, our healthcare practitioners carefully interpret the data, considering all the factors mentioned above. They then provide a professional opinion on whether the patient’s toxin or heavy metal levels are within a safe range or if they require treatment.
Interpreting these levels can be challenging due to individual variability, the need for specialized tests, and sometimes a lack of consensus in interpretation, leading to variability in practice. But, our years of experience and expertise guide us to provide accurate interpretations.
When elevated levels are detected, our practitioners may recommend further testing, lifestyle modifications, and medical treatment. This allows for the identification of the exposure source, monitoring of levels over time, reduction of exposure, and addressing any health effects caused by the exposure.
Finally, it’s crucial to note that our interpretation process at COEM is not one-size-fits-all. It requires a patient-specific approach considering a multitude of factors to ensure an accurate and meaningful interpretation. Our commitment is to provide personalized care, ensuring the health and well-being of each patient. For more information, contact us today or book an appointment online.
