Environmental Medicine

We are a trusted occupational and environmental medicine center near you. We treat patients with illnesses, harmful exposures, injuries, and other health conditions related to the environment including home, workplace, or community. Environmental exposure to different chemical, physical, and biological agents may eventually contribute to allergies, food poisoning, toxicity, infections, stress, kidney and lung disease, and more. We find the root cause of your illness and provide the required treatment. Here at COEM, we are committed to providing personalized care that treats your condition and helps enhance your overall health and well-being.

Why Choose the Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine?

At the Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine, we provide continuous and exceptional care to our patients at every level of their disorder. After listening to our patients’ concerns carefully, we create a treatment plan that suits their unique requirements and schedule and helps improve their health. We strive to treat your whole body rather than just treating the symptoms.

Our treatment is patient-centric and our doctors and healthcare providers can support the healing process by viewing illness and health as part of a cycle in which the human biological system’s components interact actively with the environment. This helps to identify lifestyle, genetic, and environmental factors that can influence a person’s health and well-being.

How May We Help You?

We are a team of compassionate and caring professionals who have years of experience in treating complex and chronic illnesses caused by environmental factors. Environmental medicine includes 5 important segments of medicine, which are nutrition, allergies, stress, infections, and toxins. These segments contribute to the “total body stress load”.

Our doctors will make every possible effort to reduce the total stress load in order to restore your strength and overcome and prevent your illness. Every patient is unique to us and our goal is to improve your quality of life by helping you achieve the health and well-being you deserve.

Environmental Medicine: Frequently Asked Questions About the Center for Occupational and Environmental Medicine

1) What Is Environmental Medicine and How Does It Differ From Other Forms of Treatment?

Environmental medicine is a branch of medicine that is not restricted by anatomical boundaries. It is concerned with the person and the way they react to their environment and then creates a treatment plan that reduces the environmental stress load and restores their health and prevents future illness.

Environmental medicine, unlike other forms of treatment, addresses every part of the body, including the brain that controls mood, behavior, and perception. Long-term exposure to environmental factors such as the chemicals, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat can cause a wide range of emotional, physical, and mental disorders including allergies, intolerances, infections, nutrition deficiencies, and more.

2) Do You Accept Health Insurance Assignments or Medicare?

No, we do not accept health insurance assignments or Medicare. Our evaluation process is detailed and time-intensive compared to the standard evaluation performed in other doctors’ offices. The insurance companies are not yet geared to refund this type of detailed evaluation.

After each consultation, we provide patients with completed HCFA forms, which they can use to file the insurance claim. We offer a discount on fees for patients who are eligible for Medicare.

3) Is Environmental Medicine Considered Alternative Medicine?

No, environmental medicine is not considered alternative medicine. It is a branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing illnesses caused by environmental factors. A combination of conventional allopathic and holistic medicine is used for treatments.

4) What Should I Bring to the Initial Visit?

Make sure to bring your prior lab reports and medical records and a list of your medications, supplements, and vitamins.

5) What Should I Expect at My Initial Consultation?

We will perform a complete examination and review your current history, family history, past medical history, medicines, supplements, and vitamins as well as assess your nutrition and lifestyle. In short, we want to know what you have done, where you have been, and where you want to go. After knowing these, we will create a treatment plan that helps to achieve a healthier life.

6) Can I Order My Own Test Kits Through Laboratories, or Can My Regular Doctor Order the Lab Tests for Me?

Our authorized laboratories can only sell test kits to licensed practitioners. We use lab tests from small companies that exclusively offer environmental and functional medicine tests. Local hospital-based and larger national labs cannot help with these highly specialized tests.

7) Are Lab Tests Covered?

Your insurance program may cover the cost of certain lab tests. However, you need to make payment to the lab if your insurance program does not cover your lab test.

8) Are Lab Tests and Supplements Included?

Certain lab tests and supplements are included. You need to make payment to the laboratory at direct lab pricing for additional tests and supplements.

9) I Don’t Live in the Charleston Area. Do You Work with Patients From Out of Town?

Yes, we work with patients from out of town. Patients across the United States and even from overseas visit us for treatment. We have approximately 50% of patients from outside the Charleston community.

10) Do You Offer Family Packages?

Yes, we offer family packages for family members living in the same house. Our goal is to help communities by providing the best possible treatment and care.

11) What Forms of Payment Do You Accept?

We accept checks and major credit cards and can also process Google Pay and Apple.
